James Watson, bi\u00f3logo molecular estadounidense, y codescubridor de la estructura de doble h\u00e9lice del ADN, falleci\u00f3 este 6 de noviembre a los 97 a\u00f1os, de acuerdo con fuentes del Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), instituci\u00f3n a la que dedic\u00f3 gran parte de su carrera.<\/span><\/p>\n

Watson naci\u00f3 en 1928, en Chicago, Estados Unidos, y en 1953, junto con Francis Crick y Maurice Wilkins, describieron la estructura del \u00e1cido desoxirribonucleico ADN, mol\u00e9cula que contiene informaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica de los seres vivos. Este hallazgo marc\u00f3 un antes y un despu\u00e9s en la historia de la biolog\u00eda y permiti\u00f3 comprender c\u00f3mo se transmite la herencia gen\u00e9tica.<\/span><\/p>\n

En 1962 recibi\u00f3 el Premio Nobel de Fisiolog\u00eda o Medicina, en conjunto con Crick y Wilkins. Su descubrimiento se considera una de las mayores revoluciones cient\u00edficas, ya que sent\u00f3 las bases para el desarrollo de la gen\u00e9tica moderna, la biotecnolog\u00eda y la medicina molecular.<\/span><\/p>\n

Adem\u00e1s de su carrera cient\u00edfica, Watson fue director y posteriormente presidente del CSHL, donde impuls\u00f3 proyectos pioneros como el Proyecto Genoma Humano, destinado a descifrar la secuencia completa del ADN humano.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sin embargo, su legado tambi\u00e9n estuvo marcado por la pol\u00e9mica. En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os de su vida, fue objeto de cr\u00edticas y sanciones institucionales debido a declaraciones consideradas racistas y anticient\u00edficas, lo que lo llev\u00f3 a perder varios t\u00edtulos honor\u00edficos.<\/span><\/p>\n
