{"id":917,"date":"2026-02-06T11:32:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T17:32:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/elcontemporaneo.mx\/?p=917"},"modified":"2026-02-06T11:46:31","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T17:46:31","slug":"el-dinosaurio-olvidado-de-cuvier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/elcontemporaneo.mx\/index.php\/2026\/02\/06\/el-dinosaurio-olvidado-de-cuvier\/","title":{"rendered":"El dinosaurio olvidado de Cuvier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ya les hab\u00eda comentado que las primeras descripciones cient\u00edficas de dinosaurios fueron publicadas en los a\u00f1os 20s del siglo XIX, provenientes de Inglaterra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pero en realidad esto no ser\u00eda del todo preciso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hubo una descripci\u00f3n formal y cient\u00edfica de un f\u00f3sil de dinosaurio previamente y fue realizada por el mism\u00edsimo Georges Cuvier, c\u00e9lebre naturalista franc\u00e9s y padre de la Paleontolog\u00eda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resulta que Cuvier public\u00f3 la descripci\u00f3n de las v\u00e9rtebras de un dinosaurio ter\u00f3podo en el a\u00f1o 1808. El material proven\u00eda de Honfleur al norte de Francia, pero este ven\u00eda combinado con restos de cocodrilos marinos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El detalle m\u00e1s importante radica en que el erudito no hizo una distinci\u00f3n entre los f\u00f3siles de cocodrilo y los de dinosaurio y m\u00e1s importante a\u00fan, los describi\u00f3, pero no se tom\u00f3 la molestia de acu\u00f1arles un nombre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En Biolog\u00eda es bien sabido que una descripci\u00f3n que no se acompa\u00f1a de un nombre resulta tan inv\u00e1lido como un nombre que no se acompa\u00f1a de una descripci\u00f3n.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En 1822, Cuvier revisit\u00f3 su material y se dio cuenta que hab\u00eda una diferencia marcada entre los f\u00f3siles, y aunque de nuevo se abstuvo de darles nombre, concluy\u00f3 que el material conten\u00eda dos tipos diferentes de animales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En 1825 su colega \u00c9tienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire por fin nombr\u00f3 los dos tipos dentro del material de Cuvier, d\u00e1ndoles los nombres de <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steneosaurus rostrominor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> y <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steneosaurus rostromajor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pero a su parecer ambos eran cocodrilos marinos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Una revisi\u00f3n del paleont\u00f3logo alem\u00e1n Christian von Meyer en 1832 le permitir\u00eda corroborar que <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steneosaurus rostromajor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> no era un cocodrilo marino, sino un gran saurio terrestre, como los hallados por\u00a0 Mantell y Buckland.
